One of the most surprising findings was the age of some millipede lineages. Dr. Marek expressed his astonishment, saying, "The biggest surprise was just how ancient some of these lineages turned out to be."
The study traced millipede origins back to the Ordovician period, nearly 460 million years ago, predating the oldest known millipede fossils by 35 million years. This suggests that millipedes were among the very first pioneers of terrestrial life, feeding on decaying organic matter long before the emergence of trees, leaves, or flowering plants.
Chemical Warfare on Land
But the surprises didn't end there. The study also revealed that millipedes were early producers of biological chemical weapons, making them the first known creatures to employ chemical defenses. Dr. Marek described them as "little chemical factories," producing their own chemical weapons some 260 million years ago.
